Blomberg Mountain & Toboggan Run

Most visitors to Bad Tölz walk past the cable-car station without a second glance, assuming Blomberg is a winter-only ski hill. They are wrong: the 1,248-metre summit is one of the most accessible and rewarding half-day excursions in the Bavarian foothills year-round, and in summer it hosts one of Germany's longest and most exhilarating natural toboggan runs — a 1.2-kilometre stainless-steel track

The Summit Experience

The Blombergbahn gondola lifts you from the edge of town to the summit in around 12 minutes, depositing you in a landscape of rolling Alpine meadows dotted with grazing cattle, wild orchids in June and the kind of 360-degree panorama — Karwendel, Benediktenwand, Herzogstand — that makes you reach for your phone before you've even stepped off the platform.

The summit Blomberghaus restaurant serves Obatzda (Bavarian spiced cheese spread), Brotzeit platters and cold Weissbier on a south-facing terrace that catches sun from mid-morning until late afternoon; it is entirely possible to spend three hours here doing nothing more than eating, drinking and staring at mountains.

The Sommerrodelbahn

The summer toboggan run (Sommerrodelbahn) uses individual wheeled sleds on a fixed stainless-steel channel; riders control their own speed with a hand brake, which means you can crawl nervously or go genuinely fast — the track includes banked corners, tunnels and a final straight that rewards bravery.

Children must be at least 3 years old and 90 cm tall to ride; children under 8 must ride with an adult. A single descent takes 3–5 minutes depending on your nerve, and most people immediately queue for a second run.

Hiking Down

The signed Blomberg Rundweg trail descends through mixed forest back to the valley in about 75 minutes and passes the Tölzer Hütte mountain hut, which serves cold drinks and warm Gulaschsuppe to hikers who have earned a rest.

The combination of gondola up, toboggan run mid-afternoon and hiking trail down makes for a perfectly structured half-day that requires no special equipment and suits families, couples and solo walkers equally well.
