Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck)
Perched 160 metres above the Rhine, Burg Stahleck is the dramatic silhouette that defines every postcard of Bacharach. Today it doubles as a youth hostel, meaning anyone can sleep inside a genuine 12th-century castle and wake to panoramic river views.
A Castle With a Living History
Built around 1135 as a toll-collecting stronghold for the Counts Palatine, Stahleck was destroyed by French troops in 1689 and left as a romantic ruin for two centuries before being meticulously reconstructed between 1925 and 1967.
Walking the steep Blücherstraße footpath from the old town takes roughly 20 minutes and rewards you with increasingly spectacular views of the Rhine bend, the slate-roofed village below, and the vine-terraced hillsides that roll away on both banks.
Staying the Night Inside the Walls
DJH Jugendherberge Stahleck is one of Germany's most atmospheric hostels, offering private rooms and dormitories within the castle's restored towers and courtyard buildings — book months ahead for summer weekends.
Even if you're not staying, the castle courtyard is freely accessible during daylight hours; the terrace café serves coffee and regional wine, making it a perfect excuse to linger and watch the river barges glide past far below.
