Huu Tiep Lake & the Downed B-52
Down a narrow alley off Hoang Hoa Tham Street — past washing lines and neighbourhood tea stalls — the rusting wreckage of a US B-52 bomber lies half-submerged in a small residential lake, exactly where it fell on the night of 27 December 1972. It is one of the most startling and thought-provoking sights in all of Hanoi, and almost nobody outside the neighbourhood knows it's there.
The Wreck and Its Story
During the infamous 'Christmas Bombing' campaign of December 1972, Hanoi's air defences shot down several B-52 Stratofortresses over the city. The wreckage at Huu Tiep Lake — landing gear, fuselage struts and metal sheathing — came to rest in this small pond and has remained there ever since, a rusting monument to the neighbourhood's wartime defiance.
A partly submerged memorial plaque marks the spot, and the area is cordoned off from the water's edge. Veterans, historians and curious travellers who find it often describe the experience as profoundly grounding — abstract historical knowledge suddenly made concrete and immediate.
Finding It (Half the Adventure)
The wreck is located at Ngo (Lane) 55, Hoang Hoa Tham Street, in the Ngoc Ha ward of Ba Dinh. Most taxi and Grab drivers know it by name (Hồ Hữu Tiệp), or look for a hand-painted sign reading 'B-52' with an arrow at the lane entrance. The alley itself — lined with potted plants, parked motorbikes and neighbourhood life — is part of the experience.
This is not a polished attraction with a ticket booth and information panels. It is an ordinary residential neighbourhood that happens to contain an extraordinary piece of history, and that rawness is precisely what makes it so memorable.
Pairing It with Ngoc Ha Village
The wreck sits in the heart of the Ngoc Ha neighbourhood — a maze of narrow alleyways, communal houses and small lakes that represents old Hanoi at its most intact. Just a few minutes' stroll from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Thang Long Citadel, Ngoc Ha rewards slow wandering: look for the small flower nurseries (the area was historically Hanoi's flower-growing village), local com binh dan (workers' rice) lunch spots and the occasional hidden communal house.
Come in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the lanes fill with schoolchildren and returning market vendors — it is the Ba Dinh that most visitors never see.
