Centro Niemeyer
Designed by Brazilian legend Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 2011, this gleaming white cultural campus on the Ría de Avilés is one of the most architecturally daring buildings in northern Spain. Its sweeping dome, auditorium and mirador tower rise beside the estuary like a utopian dream dropped into an industrial port town.
The Architecture Up Close
The centrepiece is a 45-metre-high multicoloured dome housing a permanent exhibition on Niemeyer's life and work — step inside to understand why he remained creative into his hundreds. The sinuous ramps, pure white concrete and circular forms are a masterclass in the architect's signature language of joy and movement.
Walk the elevated walkway connecting the auditorium to the tower for uninterrupted views over the ría and the old town rooftops. At golden hour the white surfaces turn amber and the reflections in the water below are genuinely photogenic.
What's On and How to Visit
The centre hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions, open-air concerts in summer and an international film festival each autumn. Check the programme on niemeyer.es before you arrive — a good exhibition can easily turn a one-hour visit into a half-day affair.
The ground-level esplanade is free to wander at any time, making it a favourite evening stroll for locals. The paid dome exhibition costs around €3–5 and is absolutely worth it for architecture enthusiasts.
