Los Cuatro Postes

A simple 16th-century granite cross mounted on four stone pillars just 1.5 km west of the city walls, Los Cuatro Postes delivers the single most iconic view of Ávila — the entire walled old town framed against the Sierra de Gredos. Every postcard you've ever seen of Ávila was shot from here.

The View and Its Legend

The monument sits on a low hill across the Río Adaja and was erected in 1594 to mark the spot where a young Teresa of Ávila and her brother were caught by their uncle as they tried to run away to be martyred by the Moors. That backstory gives the spot an unexpectedly poignant human dimension beyond the photo opportunity.

The best light falls in the late afternoon when the sun is behind you and bathes the walls in warm ochre tones. In winter, when the Sierra de Gredos is snow-capped, the backdrop becomes genuinely spectacular.

Getting There and Combining Visits

It's a flat, easy 20-minute walk from Puerta del Puente Adaja along the river path — a pleasant route past a small Romanesque bridge. Alternatively, taxis and the tourist train both stop here.

Pair the visit with a walk along the river bank below the walls, where you'll find locals fishing and picnicking well away from the tourist crowds. The low angle from the riverbank gives a completely different, more dramatic perspective on the towers.
