Rocher des Doms

Perched on a natural limestone promontory directly above the Palais des Papes, the Rocher des Doms garden delivers the most celebrated panorama in Avignon — a sweeping arc from Mont Ventoux on the left, across the silver ribbon of the Rhône, to the ruined arches of the Pont d'Avignon below and the medieval towers of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on the far bank. It costs nothing and takes ten minutes to

The Garden and Its Views

The park was laid out in the early 19th century with shaded allées of plane trees, a small ornamental lake populated by swans and ducks, and rose beds that bloom from May through October. Locals use it as an evening promenade; visitors use it as the best free viewpoint in the city. The northern belvedere terrace is the prime spot — lean on the stone balustrade and the entire Rhône valley unfolds before you.

On clear days between October and April, Mont Ventoux's snow-dusted summit is visible on the northeastern horizon, roughly 50 km away. The golden hour before sunset turns the river and the Pont d'Avignon honey-coloured — this is the shot every photographer chases.

Getting There and Combining Sights

The garden is accessed via a steep ramp from the Place du Palais (follow signs marked Rocher des Doms) or via steps from the Rue Montée du Moulin. The climb takes under five minutes. The park is open daily from 07:30 until dusk (approximately 20:00 in summer, 18:00 in winter).

Combine the visit with the Palais des Papes immediately below and the Pont d'Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet) a five-minute walk downhill along the ramparts. The three together make a natural half-day circuit of Avignon's UNESCO heritage core.
