Augsburg Christmas Market (Christkindlesmarkt)

Augsburg's Christmas market spreads across the grand Rathausplatz and Moritzplatz from late November through Christmas Eve, with the Renaissance Town Hall and Golden Hall as its backdrop — arguably the most architecturally dramatic setting of any Christmas market in Bavaria. Around 200 stalls sell handmade ornaments, roasted almonds, and the city's own Augsburger Lebkuchen.

The Setting That Sets It Apart

The Elias-Holl-designed Rathaus, completed in 1624, towers over the market stalls in a way that no tent or temporary structure can diminish — the proportions make it feel like a stage set designed specifically for the occasion. After dark, when the building is lit gold, the scene is genuinely cinematic.

A large Advent calendar is mounted on the Perlachturm tower beside the Rathaus, with a new window opened each evening at 17:30 to a short musical performance. Families gather below in the cold, mulled wine in hand, for what is one of the most charming small rituals in Bavarian Christmas culture.

What to Eat and Buy

Look for Augsburger Zirbelnuss-Punsch, a pine-nut punch unique to the city, served hot in ceramic mugs you can keep. The local Lebkuchen here tend to be softer and spicier than the Nuremberg variety, made to old guild recipes.

For gifts, seek out the stalls selling hand-blown glass ornaments and carved wooden figures from the Erzgebirge region — quality varies wildly, so take your time. The inner ring of stalls closest to the Rathaus tends to have the most artisan-quality goods.
