Senso-ji Temple & Kaminarimon Gate
No single image says 'Tokyo' more loudly than the giant red lantern of Kaminarimon framing the five-storey pagoda beyond it. Founded in 628 AD, Senso-ji is not just the city's oldest temple — it is a living, breathing neighbourhood anchor that rewards every hour you give it.
The Legend Behind the Lantern
Senso-ji's origin story reads like mythology: two fishermen hauling their nets from the Sumida River in 628 AD pulled up a tiny golden statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon. They threw it back; it returned. A local chieftain built a shrine to house it, and a pilgrimage tradition was born that has never stopped. The buildings you see today are faithful post-war reconstructions — much of the complex was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt by a public that refused to let it vanish.
Walk the full axis: through Kaminarimon, past the 250-metre Nakamise shopping street, under the inner Hozomon Gate, and up to the Main Hall. Look up inside — some of the greatest artworks in Senso-ji's collection are painted directly on the ceiling or hang high on the walls.
Timing Your Visit Like a Local
The crowds on the main approach are at their worst from late morning through mid-afternoon on weekends. Aim for a weekday, and arrive before 9 am — the same stone path that feels like a rugby scrum at 1 pm is a genuine pleasure at dawn, with incense smoke curling through cool air and almost nobody around.
The temple grounds are open 24 hours and the buildings are illuminated until 23:00, making an evening visit a completely different, far quieter experience. The Main Hall itself opens at 6:00 am (6:30 am October–March) and closes at 5:00 pm, so plan accordingly if the interior is on your list.
