Jameos del Agua

Carved into a lava tunnel that plunges beneath the Atlantic, Jameos del Agua is one of César Manrique's most jaw-dropping creations — part art space, part natural wonder, part concert hall. The blind albino crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha) that live in the brackish lagoon inside exist nowhere else on Earth.

Inside the Lava Tube

The tunnel was formed by a volcanic eruption on Lanzarote roughly 3,000 years ago, and the sea has seeped in at its lowest point to create a luminous teal lagoon that glows under carefully placed lights. Walking the path beside it feels genuinely otherworldly — cool, hushed and faintly surreal.

Look down into the water and you will spot dozens of tiny white crabs picking their way across the submerged lava. They are blind because their ancestors colonised this lightless world long before humans arrived, and their pale shells have become a symbol of Lanzarote itself.

Manrique's Artistic Touch

César Manrique transformed the upper cavern into an auditorium with extraordinary acoustics; international artists from Shirley Bassey to Rubén Blades have performed here. The whitewashed terrace garden above, filled with palms and a turquoise pool, looks like a film set and is one of the most-photographed spots on the island.

The integration of architecture with raw volcanic rock is seamless — Manrique's philosophy that human creation should never dominate nature is visible in every detail, from the hand-painted ceramic tiles to the way spotlights mimic moonlight on the cave ceiling.

Planning Your Visit

Jameos del Agua sits on the northern coast near Arrieta, about 25 km from Arrecife, and is easily reached by car or the Línea 9 bus from the capital. Arrive early in the morning to beat tour groups and enjoy the lagoon in near-silence.

Tuesday and Saturday evenings see the auditorium open for cultural events; check the Cabildo de Lanzarote website for the current programme. Combining the visit with nearby Cueva de los Verdes, just 1 km up the road, makes for an unforgettable half-day underground.
