Castello di Arco
Perched on a sheer rock spur above the town, the 12th-century Castello di Arco is the unmissable icon of Garda Trentino — a dramatic silhouette that rewards every step of the climb with sweeping views over the Sarca Valley and the distant glimmer of Lake Garda.
The climb and the castle
The approach winds first through the narrow cobblestone lanes of the historic centre and then up through a fragrant olive grove, giving you a taste of Arco's layered landscape before you even reach the gate.
Inside the walls, information panels trace a history dating back to the 6th century AD. Highlights include intact water cisterns, partially preserved rooms, and the Torre Renghera — the highest tower — from which Monte Stivo, the Paganella massif, Monte Brione and Torbole all come into view at once.
Frescoes and a quiet terrace
A remarkable cycle of late-medieval frescoes survives in one of the castle's inner chambers, a rare find for a hilltop ruin of this scale — look for the courtly hunting and tournament scenes.
Just below the Torre Grande a small bar-restaurant occupies a meadow terrace; order a local Trentino white and let the panorama do the rest before you descend.
