Las Salinas de Gallocanta
Most visitors to Aragon never make it to the vast, shimmering Laguna de Gallocanta on the Teruel-Zaragoza border — and that is precisely what makes it so extraordinary. This shallow saline lake, the largest natural inland lagoon in Spain and one of the biggest in Europe, hosts up to 60,000 common cranes in winter and a resident flamingo colony that feels entirely out of place on the Iberian meseta
Birds, Salt and Silence
Gallocanta sits at 1,000 metres elevation on a semi-arid plateau ringed by low hills and almost entirely empty of human infrastructure — which is why the wildlife is so dense. Between November and February the noise of arriving cranes at dusk is a physical experience, a rolling thunder of wingbeats and bugling calls that echoes off the water for kilometres.
Flamingos began breeding here in the 1980s and a small colony now stays year-round; their pink-and-white reflections in the silver water against a backdrop of snow-dusted sierra make for genuinely surreal photography.
The lake edges are fringed with halophyte plants — glasswort, sea purslane — that turn vivid crimson in autumn, creating a colour palette that looks nothing like inland Spain and everything like a coastal salt marsh.
How to Visit and What to Bring
A signed 12 km walking and cycling circuit rings the lagoon, with three bird-watching hides (observatorios) positioned for optimal morning light. The hides are free and unstaffed; bring your own binoculars and a telephoto lens — birds keep a respectful distance from the shore.
The nearest village, Gallocanta (population under 100), has a small visitor centre with telescopes and knowledgeable volunteer rangers who speak some English. The village bar serves coffee and a basic menú del día — order the migas, which are exceptional.
