Souk by the Sea
Every Friday evening, Nahda Street transforms into Aqaba's most joyful open-air market, where local artisans, street food vendors and live performers spill out under the stars beside the Gulf. It is a community project as much as a shopping trip — and the energy is infectious.
Stalls, Crafts & Haggling
Held weekly next to Captain's Hotel on Nahda Street, Souk by the Sea draws around 30 stalls selling exquisitely handmade jewellery, embroidered clothing, wooden gifts, hand-painted ceramics and natural beauty products — all made by Aqaba residents. Bargaining is warmly expected, and vendors are happy to tell you the story behind each piece.
Pick up a keffiyeh, a hand-stamped copper dish or a bag of locally blended za'atar spice mix — things you will actually use at home rather than dusty tourist tat. Henna artists set up near the entrance, and you can leave with a temporary tattoo and a cup of hot mint tea before you have spent 10 JOD.
Food, Music & Family Atmosphere
The food side of the souk is just as compelling as the shopping. Vendors serve grilled meats, fresh-squeezed juice, knafeh dripping with syrup and warm manakish straight off the saj — the kind of snacking that turns into a full dinner without you noticing.
Live folk music and occasional cultural performances organised by local non-profits give the market a festive, inclusive feel that attracts families, young locals and travellers in equal measure. It runs from 6 PM to 11 PM, making it the perfect way to spend a Friday evening in Aqaba.
