Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel
Rising above the compact old town on a rocky promontory, Aoiz's parish church of San Miguel Arcángel is a robust 16th-century Gothic structure that anchors the entire valley skyline. Its honey-coloured ashlar walls and sturdy bell tower reward the short climb with a sense of stepping straight into medieval Navarre.
Architecture worth lingering over
The single-nave interior shelters a richly carved Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to the Archangel Michael, its gilded panels glowing warmly against the cool stone walls. Look up at the ribbed vaulting — each keystone is carved with heraldic shields belonging to the noble families who funded the church's construction.
The main portal faces the Plaza de los Fueros and features a pointed arch framed by delicate mouldings that have survived centuries of Pyrenean weather remarkably intact. Spend a few minutes walking the full perimeter to spot the gargoyles tucked along the roofline.
The church in its urban context
San Miguel sits at the heart of Aoiz's casco histórico, and the small square in front of it doubles as the social hub of the town — locals stop here to chat after the Sunday market and children play football against the church wall with cheerful irreverence.
From the churchyard you can peer down into the gorge of the Irati River below, making this simultaneously a heritage visit and one of the best natural viewpoints in town. Early morning light strikes the façade at a flattering angle, so arrive before 9 am for photography.
