Foz de Lumbier & Irati River Gorge Walk
Just a short drive from Aoiz, the Foz de Lumbier is a dramatic limestone gorge carved by the Irati River where griffon vultures wheel at eye level above the narrow canyon trail. Pair it with the gentler riverside path along the Irati closer to Aoiz itself for a full day of effortless Navarrese nature.
Walking into the gorge
The Foz de Lumbier trail (part of the old Irati railway line) runs about 1.5 km through a slot canyon barely wide enough for two walkers abreast, with sheer 100-metre limestone cliffs on either side. The path is flat, paved and suitable for all fitness levels, which makes the drama of the scenery feel almost unfairly earned.
Griffon vultures nest in the cliff faces and are virtually guaranteed sightings year-round; Egyptian vultures appear in summer. Bring binoculars and patience — the birds often soar at the same height as the canyon rim, giving extraordinary close-up views.
The Irati River near Aoiz
Back in Aoiz, the Irati River curves around the base of the old town in a tight meander, and a well-maintained riverside path follows its banks through poplar groves and past old mill ruins. In summer the water runs clear green and locals swim in the natural pools just downstream of the medieval bridge.
The medieval bridge of Aoiz — Puente Medieval de Aoiz — is a graceful single-arch stone crossing that frames the river perfectly for photographs. The walk from the bridge to the edge of the municipal park takes under 20 minutes and is flat throughout.
