Mercado Central de Antofagasta

Tucked into a bustling block in the city centre, Antofagasta's Mercado Central is the living, steam-filled heart of local food culture. Fishermen unload their morning catch steps away, stall holders shout the day's prices, and the smell of sizzling garlic and lemon drifts through every aisle — this is where the city actually eats.

The seafood stalls

The market's ground floor is a parade of fresh Pacific produce: whole congrio (conger eel), locos (Chilean abalone), piures, sea urchin roe and gleaming fillets of lenguado (flounder) laid on crushed ice. Vendors are used to curious visitors and happy to explain what everything is.

Arrive before 10 am to see the full selection before the lunch crowd picks the best cuts. Prices are far lower than any restaurant in town, and the quality is as fresh as it gets on this coast.

Sit-down lunch at the market restaurants

The upper level and rear of the market is lined with small comedores — family-run lunch counters serving fixed-price menus of traditional Chilean seafood dishes for very little money. Chupe de mariscos (shellfish gratin), caldillo de congrio (conger eel soup) and ceviche with lemon and cilantro are staples you should not leave without trying.

Restaurante Comida Chilena Antofagasta El Bose, inside the market at Maipú 776 Local 74, is a reliable local favourite known for abundant portions, fast service and honest prices — exactly the kind of place that never appears in hotel brochures.
