Alcazaba of Antequera & Peña de los Enamorados Panorama

Perched on a rocky spur above the old town, the Alcazaba of Antequera delivers one of the most theatrical 360-degree panoramas in inland Andalusia — the terracotta rooftops of the city below, the flat vega stretching to the horizon, and the unmistakable silhouette of La Peña de los Enamorados (Lovers' Rock) looming to the north like a reclining face against the sky.

The Castle Itself

The fortress dates from the 14th century, built by the Nasrid rulers of Granada on Roman and earlier foundations. The Torre del Papabellotas — the main watchtower — is climbable and its rooftop platform is the highest publicly accessible point in the city, giving you an unobstructed view that sweeps from the Sierra de las Nieves to the south to the Torcal limestone massif to the southeast.

Immediately below the Alcazaba sits the Arco de los Gigantes, a Renaissance triumphal arch built in 1585 that frames the entrance to the old town and is covered in Roman inscriptions salvaged from across the municipality — an open-air epigraphy museum hiding in plain sight.

Best Time to Visit

Late afternoon light turns the sandstone walls golden and the vega below takes on a warm amber glow that photographers chase obsessively. The castle gardens are planted with roses and orange trees that perfume the air in spring, making an April or May visit particularly rewarding.

The Alcazaba is a short, steep walk up the Cuesta de la Alcazaba from the Plaza de San Sebastián in the town centre — ten minutes on foot, but wear shoes with grip as the cobbles can be slippery after rain.
