Gorges du Fier & Château de Montrottier
Just 10 km west of Annecy, the Gorges du Fier are among the most dramatic slot canyons in the French Alps — a narrow river gorge where you walk a suspended metal walkway above churning jade water, the walls closing to just a few metres overhead. Almost no one outside the region knows it exists.
Walking the Gorge
The walkway runs for about 250 metres through the gorge, suspended 3–10 metres above the River Fier as it crashes through limestone sculpted into smooth bowls and overhanging walls stained orange and black with mineral deposits. The noise inside the canyon is tremendous — bring a waterproof jacket if the river is high in spring snowmelt.
The walk takes 30–40 minutes at a leisurely pace and is suitable for older children; the metal grating underfoot is solid but the drop below is vertiginous enough to quicken the pulse. At the far end the canyon opens suddenly into a wide pebble beach where the river calms — a good spot to eat lunch.
The site is run by a private family and has been since the 1860s; the ticket booth is charmingly old-fashioned and the audio guide is optional but adds genuine geological context.
Château de Montrottier Next Door
The combined ticket includes entry to the 13th-century Château de Montrottier, a round keep on a wooded promontory overlooking the gorge exit. Inside, the Léon Marès collection fills the rooms with an eccentric treasure trove: Japanese armour, Flemish tapestries, Savoyard pewter, medieval weapons and African bronzes accumulated by a 19th-century collector with omnivorous taste.
The keep's top floor offers a view over the Fier valley and toward the Aravis mountains that rewards the spiral staircase climb. The whole combination — gorge plus castle — takes about 2 hours and costs less than a museum ticket in Paris.
Getting There
Drive west from Annecy on the D14 toward Lovagny; the site is signed from the village. There is no reliable public transport, making this a car or taxi excursion. Combine it with a stop at the village of Lovagny itself, which has a good traditional restaurant, Le Château de Lovagny, for lunch.
The gorge is closed in winter when high water makes the walkway unsafe; it typically opens April through October.
