Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon), Ilha Grande

Tucked inside Ilha Grande's protected coastline, Lagoa Azul is a shallow natural aquarium where the water shifts from emerald to electric blue and every starfish on the sandy floor is visible from the surface. No snorkel required — the clarity alone will make you gasp.

Why it stops you in your tracks

Lagoa Azul sits in a sheltered cove on the northwestern tip of Ilha Grande, part of the Angra dos Reis archipelago. The combination of white sand beneath shallow, still water creates a natural lens effect that turns the bay into an open-air aquarium — schools of sergeant-major fish dart beneath the hull of your boat before you even drop anchor.

The lagoon is a standard stop on every local schooner circuit, but arriving by private speedboat in the early morning — before the day-trippers — means you'll have those iridescent waters almost entirely to yourself. Bring a mask and fins; the snorkelling here is genuinely world-class for a spot with no coral reef.

Getting there & what to expect

All access is by water: ferries depart from Angra dos Reis' main pier (Cais de Santa Luzia) to Vila do Abraão on Ilha Grande, and local boat operators run Lagoa Azul as their first stop on the classic 'volta completa da ilha' circuit. Journey time from the pier to the lagoon is roughly 40 minutes by speedboat.

Water temperature sits around 26–28 °C between November and April — peak season for visibility and warmth. Outside those months the lagoon is quieter and still beautiful, though afternoon chop can reduce clarity. Sunscreen is banned inside the lagoon to protect marine life, so bring a rash guard.
