Terrasse des Beaux-Arts & Montée Saint-Maurice
For the classic postcard view of Angers — château towers, cathedral spire and the broad silver ribbon of the Maine river all in one frame — climb the Montée Saint-Maurice, the long stone staircase that links the lower city to the cathedral esplanade. The terrace at the top is one of those effortless urban viewpoints that rewards almost no effort with an outsized payoff.
The Climb & the View
The Montée Saint-Maurice is a monumental 17th-century staircase of 56 steps flanked by stone balustrades, rising from the Rue Saint-Laud up to the parvis of the Cathédrale Saint-Maurice. The view from the top terrace sweeps west over the Maine river, with the château's dark towers framed to the right and the old quarter's slate rooftops cascading below.
At dusk the tuffeau stone of the cathedral glows warm gold and the river catches the last light — this is the prime photography window. On clear evenings you can see the wooded hills of the Corniche Angevine on the far bank.
Cathédrale Saint-Maurice
While you're at the top, step inside the 12th-century Cathédrale Saint-Maurice, whose single wide nave (one of the earliest examples of Angevin Gothic vaulting) is remarkable for its sense of space and its extraordinary collection of 12th-century stained glass. The rose window above the west door is particularly fine.
The cathedral's west façade, with its three sculpted portals depicting the life of Christ and the Last Judgement, is among the most complete Romanesque-Gothic façades in the Loire Valley — take time to read the stonework before heading inside.
Around the Esplanade
The esplanade in front of the cathedral is a natural gathering point for Angers locals in the evening. In summer, temporary art installations and food trucks sometimes appear here, making it a lively spot for a pre-dinner drink with a view.
From the esplanade it's a three-minute walk to the Place Sainte-Croix, a charming small square lined with half-timbered medieval houses — one of the most photogenic corners of old Angers.
