Mystery Island (Inyeug)
A boomerang-shaped uninhabited sandbar a ten-minute boat ride from Anelcauhat, Mystery Island is ringed by a protected marine sanctuary where the turquoise water is so transparent you can read the coral from the surface. It is the jewel of southern Vanuatu and the single most photographed spot in the Aneityum group.
A Beach That Earns Its Hype
Mystery Island sits in a lagoon of almost supernatural clarity — the kind of water that makes you second-guess whether you are looking through glass or air. The boomerang-shaped islet is fringed by powdery white sand on one side and crushed-shell shingle on the other, so reef shoes are worth packing for the eastern shore.
The island is uninhabited year-round, which means no hotels, no generators, no noise — just palm fronds, birdsong and the occasional splash of a parrotfish. When no cruise ship is anchored offshore, you may genuinely have the whole place to yourself.
Snorkel the Marine Sanctuary
Slip into the water directly from the beach and you enter one of the healthiest reef systems in the South Pacific. Clownfish dart through anemones, parrotfish crunch noisily on staghorn coral, and if you are lucky a sea turtle will cruise past at arm's length.

The Pop-Up Market
When a cruise ship calls, Aneityum islanders paddle across by outrigger and set up stalls selling woven baskets, carved wooden figures, coconut oil, kava root and freshly grilled lobster. Prices are fair and fixed — bargaining is not part of the local culture — and every purchase goes directly to a village family.
Even outside cruise-ship days, a handful of stalls may be operating. Look for the women selling fresh coconuts cracked to order: cold, sweet and the best possible drink after a morning in the sun.
