Swedish American Museum

Topped by a water tower painted with the Swedish flag, this three-story landmark at 5211 N. Clark Street is the beating cultural heart of Andersonville. Step inside and you will quickly understand why Chicago's Swedish population was once second only to Stockholm's.

A Nation Inside Four Walls

The 24,000-square-foot building packs two gallery spaces, the permanent 'Dream of America' immigration exhibit, a Nordic Family Genealogy Center, and the Brunk Children's Museum of Immigration into one compact, endlessly rewarding afternoon.

Rotating art shows keep repeat visits fresh, while the genealogy center draws Scandinavian-Americans from across the country hunting for ancestral records. The museum's collection runs to roughly 12,000 objects, from Viking-era artifacts to 20th-century immigrant photographs.

Beyond the Exhibits

Mormors Café on site serves Swedish pancakes with lingonberries — a small, delicious ritual worth building your morning around. The Kerstin Andersson Museum Store stocks Marabou chocolate, hand-painted Dala horses, and Nordic children's books you won't find anywhere else in the Midwest.

On the last Friday of every month the museum stays open until 7 p.m. for Late Night, with free admission after 4 p.m. — the perfect low-key evening out for culture lovers on a budget.

Getting There & Timing

The CTA Red Line stops at Berwyn, a short walk south, and the No. 22 Clark Street bus stops within 150 feet of the front door. Parking is free on Sundays on surrounding streets, making a weekend morning visit especially painless.

June is prime time: the museum anchors Andersonville's Midsommarfest street festival, when the whole neighborhood erupts in flower crowns, folk dancing, and open-air smörgåsbord stalls.
