Every Friday morning the Stadsplein in the heart of Amstelveen transforms into one of the largest and most varied outdoor markets in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, with over 200 stalls spilling across the pedestrianised city centre. Fresh flowers, Dutch cheeses, stroopwafels, seasonal produce and affordable fashion make it a genuine local institution rather than a tourist trap.

What to Expect at the Stalls

The market runs the full gamut from farm-fresh vegetables and fragrant flower stalls to vintage clothing, household goods and street food. Locals do their weekly grocery shop here alongside visitors hunting for Dutch specialities like aged Gouda, poffertjes (mini pancakes) and freshly baked bread.

The atmosphere is cheerful and unhurried — very different from the tourist-heavy markets in central Amsterdam. Vendors are used to curious visitors and happy to let you taste before you buy, especially at the cheese and charcuterie stalls.

The Wider Stadshart Neighbourhood

Stadshart Amstelveen is the compact urban core of the city, a walkable mix of covered shopping arcades, independent boutiques, pavement cafés and cultural venues. The Cobra Museum and the Amstelveense Schouwburg theatre are both within two minutes on foot, making a Friday visit easy to combine with a cultural afternoon.

The neighbourhood has been steadily refreshed with new restaurants and fashion stores, yet retains a relaxed suburban pace that Amsterdam's city centre lost long ago. Grab a coffee at one of the terrace cafés on Stadsplein and watch the market bustle unfold around you.

Japan Festival & Seasonal Events

Beyond the weekly market, Stadshart hosts the Japan Festival every June — a celebration of East Asian fashion, dance and food that reflects Amstelveen's sizeable Japanese expat community, one of the largest in Europe. The Bacchus Wine Festival, also in June, draws wine lovers to the area for tastings and masterclasses.

In July, Amstelveen Culinair brings local restaurants and bars together for a spectacular open-air food festival along the shores of De Poel lake, just a short cycle from Stadshart.
