Maison de Jules Verne

Jules Verne lived and wrote in Amiens for the last 35 years of his life, and the eccentric neo-Gothic house he built on Rue Charles Dubois — complete with a five-storey tower he called his 'lighthouse' — is now a museum as inventive as the man himself. Most visitors to Amiens walk past it entirely.

Inside the Inventor's Mind

Verne wrote 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Centre of the Earth while living in Amiens, and the house fizzes with the energy of a Victorian polymath at full tilt. His personal library, globe collection and correspondence are displayed in rooms that feel barely touched since his death in 1905.

The tower study — reached by a narrow spiral stair — is where Verne sat to watch the trains and imagine their trajectories across the globe. The view over the rooftops is unchanged.

A City That Shaped His Work

Verne was not just a resident but a civic figure: he served on Amiens city council for 15 years and co-founded the local literary society. The museum contextualises his work within the intellectual ferment of a provincial French city hungry for modernity.

Interactive displays (in French and English) trace the real science behind his fictional technology — submarines, hot-air balloons, moon rockets — and show how many of his 'impossible' inventions became reality within decades.

Practical Visit Tips

The museum is compact enough to visit in 90 minutes but rich enough to reward two hours. Buy tickets online in July and August when school groups fill the morning slots; afternoons are quieter.

The house is a 20-minute walk north of the cathedral through ordinary residential streets — a pleasant contrast to the tourist centre, and the neighbourhood around Rue Charles Dubois has a good independent bakery worth stopping at.
