Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens

Standing 42 metres high at the vault and wide enough to swallow Notre-Dame de Paris whole, Amiens Cathedral is the largest Gothic building in France by volume — and arguably its most breathtaking. UNESCO listed it in 1981, and once you step inside its soaring nave, you'll understand why instantly.

A stone Bible in light and colour

The west façade bristles with more than 3,500 carved figures telling the full arc of Christian scripture — medieval storytelling in limestone that still stops visitors cold. Every statue, capital and tympanum was originally painted in vivid reds, blues and golds, and a free son-et-lumière projection called 'La Cathédrale en Couleurs' resurrects those colours on summer evenings from dusk until around 11 pm.

Inside, the nave stretches 145 metres from door to apse, and the choir stalls — 110 of them, carved between 1508 and 1522 — are considered the finest ensemble of Renaissance woodcarving in northern France. Give them at least 30 minutes; the scenes of daily medieval life hidden in the misericords are wickedly funny.

Practical tips for your visit

The cathedral is free to enter and opens daily from 8:30 am to 6:15 pm (later in summer). Climb the north tower with a guide for a close-up of the flying buttresses and a panorama over the Somme plain — tours run on weekend afternoons and cost around €7.

Arrive early on a clear morning when the rose windows throw coloured light across the pale stone floor. The square in front, Place Notre-Dame, has good café terraces where you can sit, sip a coffee and watch the façade change colour as the sun moves.

The cathedral is a 10-minute walk from Amiens-Ville train station, which has direct TGV links to Paris Gare du Nord in about 70 minutes.
