Lahangan Sweet Viewpoint
Perched high in the mountains above Amed, Lahangan Sweet is the single most dramatic viewpoint in east Bali — a wooden platform built into the trunk of a towering tree, aimed directly at the volcanic cone of Mount Agung. On a clear morning, the view from here stops conversation entirely.
The platform in the tree
Lahangan Sweet sits well above sea level in the hills behind Amed, roughly a 30–40 minute drive inland from the coast. The signature feature is a sturdy wooden viewing platform constructed partway up a large tree, angled to frame Mount Agung perfectly — a composition that has made it one of the most photographed spots in east Bali.
Beyond the tree platform there are several other open viewpoints across the same hilltop, giving you angles from the volcano all the way down to the coastline and surrounding mountain ranges. It is a panorama that rewards slow exploration, not just a single selfie.
Timing your visit
Clouds gather around Agung's summit by mid-morning on most days, so the golden rule is to arrive early — ideally at or before sunrise. The approach road winds through quiet Balinese countryside, and the drive itself, past terraced hillsides and tiny temples, is part of the pleasure.
The dry season (April to October) gives the highest chance of a clear volcano view. During the wet season Agung is frequently hidden, so always check the weather forecast the evening before and be prepared to adjust plans.
Practical details
There is a small entrance fee at Lahangan Sweet, and a modest warung on site sells coffee and snacks — useful fuel after an early-morning drive. The site is not yet heavily commercialised, which keeps the atmosphere calm and the photos uncluttered by crowds.
Combine Lahangan Sweet with a stop at Bukit Cinta ('Love Hill'), another hilltop meadow viewpoint closer to Amed that frames Agung above rice fields. The two make a natural morning loop before heading back to the coast for snorkelling.
