Valle delle Ferriere Nature Reserve

Less than two kilometres from Amalfi's harbour, the Valle delle Ferriere is a UNESCO-listed nature reserve sheltering a microclimate so mild that Woodwardia radicans — a fern species that survived the last Ice Age — still grows here in lush prehistoric groves. A three-hour round-trip hike leads to a 30-metre waterfall deep in the gorge.

The Trail

The path begins at the top of the Valle dei Mulini, continuing past the paper museum ruins and climbing steadily through terraced lemon groves and chestnut woodland. The trail is well-maintained by the Corpo Forestale and marked throughout; total elevation gain is around 350 metres.

After about an hour the valley narrows dramatically, the temperature drops several degrees and the giant Woodwardia ferns — some with fronds over two metres long — begin to appear along the stream banks. The effect is genuinely primordial, like walking into a Jurassic landscape.

The Waterfall & Iron Ruins

The main reward is the Cascata della Valle delle Ferriere, a 30-metre waterfall plunging into a clear rock pool. In spring and early summer the flow is powerful enough to create a permanent cool mist; by August it slows but remains photogenic.

The name Ferriere (ironworks) refers to the medieval iron foundries that once operated here. You can see the remains of stone furnace structures beside the stream — a reminder that this apparently wild valley was once an industrial site serving the Amalfi Republic.

Wildlife & Best Season

The reserve is home to peregrine falcons, kingfishers and the rare Salamandrina perspicillata (spectacled salamander) found only in central and southern Italy. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars and arrive early morning when activity peaks.

Spring (April–June) is the best season: the waterfall is at full flow, the ferns are at their most vivid green and wildflowers line the path. Avoid the trail after heavy rain as the stream can flood the lower section.
