Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)
The Sentiero degli Dei is a 7.8-kilometre ridge walk that traverses the Lattari Mountains at 600 metres above sea level, offering a sustained, unbroken panorama over the entire Gulf of Salerno that no coastal road or boat trip can match. On clear days you can see Capri, Ischia and the distant cone of Vesuvius simultaneously.
The Route
The classic direction runs from Bomerano (a hamlet of Agerola, reached by bus from Amalfi) west to Nocelle, the tiny village above Positano. The path is waymarked with red-and-white CAI blazes and is mostly well-maintained, though two short sections require hands-on-rock scrambling — nothing technical, but not suitable for young children or anyone unsteady on their feet.
The first hour from Bomerano crosses high pasture with grazing horses and views north into the mountains; the middle section hugs a sheer limestone cliff face with the sea 600 metres directly below; the final descent into Nocelle is through terraced lemon and chestnut groves. Allow 4–5 hours including stops.
Logistics and What to Bring
From Nocelle you descend a long staircase of roughly 1,800 steps to Positano — legs permitting — or take the local bus down to the SS163 and then a ferry or bus onward. The Bomerano-to-Nocelle direction means you finish in Positano, which is a satisfying narrative arc and gives you a celebratory swim at Fornillo Beach.
Carry at least 1.5 litres of water — there are no reliable water sources or cafés on the path itself. A light wind jacket is useful even in summer as the ridge can be exposed. Start no later than 8 am in July and August to avoid the worst heat on the open cliff section.
