St. Peter's Church Tower (Alter Peter)

Locals call it Alter Peter — Old Pete — and this 92-metre red-brick tower attached to Munich's oldest parish church is the insider's answer to the question of where to get the best panoramic view of the Altstadt. Unlike the Neues Rathaus elevator, which faces north, the Alter Peter tower looks directly south toward the Alps, and on a clear Föhn day in autumn or early spring the snow-capped peaks a

The Climb and the View

There is no lift: 306 steps wind up a narrow spiral staircase, with small landings where you can catch your breath and peer through slit windows as the city slowly drops away beneath you. The final platform is open-air and partially enclosed by a metal railing, giving a 360-degree sweep across the Viktualienmarkt rooftops, the twin towers of the Frauenkirche, the Isar river valley and — weather permitting — the full sweep of the Bavarian Alps from Zugspitze to the Wendelstein.

The tower has a quirky feature worth knowing: its clock face has not one but two minute hands, a legacy of a historic dispute between the church and the city about whose clock should set the official time. The double hand is now a beloved Munich oddity that locals point out with pride.

When to Go

The Föhn wind — a warm, dry Alpine airflow — dramatically clears atmospheric haze and makes the Alps appear startlingly close. It typically arrives in October–November and again in February–March, and Munich weather apps specifically flag Föhn days. Timing your Alter Peter climb to coincide with a Föhn day rewards you with a view that feels almost unreal in its clarity.

Arrive at opening time on a weekday to avoid queues on the narrow staircase, which can create a bottleneck in summer. The climb takes roughly 10–15 minutes at a relaxed pace and the platform is small, so early mornings give you the best chance of having the view largely to yourself.
