Altonaer Balkon
Perched above the Elbe, the Altonaer Balkon is a broad, tree-lined terrace that delivers one of the most sweeping river views in all of Hamburg — completely free and open around the clock. On clear days you can watch container giants glide silently past, with the Köhlbrandbrücke arching across the horizon.
The View Itself
The elevated promenade sits roughly 20 metres above the Elbe, giving you an unobstructed sweep from the port cranes of Steinwerder all the way west toward Blankenese. Sunset here turns the water a deep copper-gold, and locals arrive with wine and blankets to claim the best bench spots.
Directly below, the Neumühlen waterfront hums with cyclists and joggers on the Elbe cycle path, so the balcony feels like a calm, elevated stage above all that movement — perfect for lingering with a coffee from the nearby kiosk.
Getting There & Around
The balcony is a five-minute walk south from Altona S-Bahn station: head down Palmaille, turn onto Große Elbstraße and follow the signs uphill into Elbhangpark. The park itself cascades down to the river in terraced lawns, ideal for a slow afternoon ramble.
Combine the visit with a stroll along the Neumühlen promenade to the old Övelgönne museum harbour, where decommissioned steamships and tugboats are moored permanently — an unexpectedly photogenic extension of the same walk.
