Bar Restaurante Txoko-Eder
Tucked into the old centre of Alsasua, Txoko-Eder is the kind of neighbourhood bar where the counter is loaded with pintxos by noon and the house wine comes in a ceramic pot without anyone asking. It is the most reliable place in town to eat like a local without paying restaurant prices.
What to Order
The gildas — the classic Basque skewer of anchovy, olive and guindilla pepper — are assembled with noticeably good anchovies here, briny and firm rather than the mushy tinned variety found elsewhere.
On weekdays a menú del día (typically €12–14) runs to three courses with wine and bread; the rotating main course often features bacalao a la navarra or slow-cooked lamb from the Urbasa plateau.
Ask the bar staff which pintxos have just been made fresh — the warm ones involving mushrooms and local Idiazabal cheese are worth prioritising over anything that has been sitting under cling film.
The Atmosphere
Weekend mornings see three generations of Alsasua families squeezed around small tables, the television showing Basque pelota and the conversation loud enough that you will need to lean in.
The bar is a genuine social hub rather than a tourist operation — prices are in chalk on a board, the décor is unchanged since the 1980s, and that is entirely the point.
Arrive by 13:00 on weekdays to secure a table for the menú; by 13:30 every seat is taken.
