Rubell Museum
Housed in a converted 100,000-square-foot former DEA warehouse, the Rubell Museum is one of the largest private contemporary art collections in North America — and Allapattah's undisputed crown jewel. Walking its 36 gallery rooms feels like a private tour through five decades of art history, with surprises around every corner.
A Collection That Rewrites the Rules
The Rubell family began collecting in 1965, and their holdings now span more than 7,200 works by over 1,000 artists. On any given visit you might stand face-to-face with a Keith Haring canvas, a Jeff Koons sculpture, or a monumental Kehinde Wiley portrait — all under one sprawling industrial roof.
The 2.5-acre campus also includes a sculpture garden, an art research library, a bookstore, and Leku, the on-site restaurant that spills out onto a sun-drenched courtyard. It is not a museum you rush through — plan at least three hours.
Why Allapattah Makes It Special
The Rubell moved here from Wynwood in 2019, and its arrival turbocharged the neighbourhood's transformation into Miami's newest art district. Arriving by Metrorail to the Allapattah station and walking past produce stalls and Dominican bakeries before stepping into world-class contemporary art is a contrast that no other Miami museum can match.
During Miami Art Week each December, the museum hosts special exhibitions and events that draw collectors and curators from around the globe — but the permanent collection is reason enough to visit any time of year.
