Chiesa di San Francesco & its Cloister
Tucked into a quiet corner of the old town just off Via Carlo Alberto, the 14th-century Chiesa di San Francesco is Alghero's most quietly beautiful building — and its roofless Gothic cloister is one of those rare places that makes you stop, breathe and feel genuinely transported.
Architecture worth slowing down for
The church itself is a layered beauty: Romanesque bones, Gothic arches and late-Renaissance details all coexist without conflict, the result of centuries of careful additions. The interior is cool and hushed, with pale stone walls and a graceful apse that draws the eye upward.
The adjacent cloister is the real prize — an elegant arcaded courtyard open to the sky, its columns a mix of Catalan Gothic and Renaissance capitals. It is small enough to feel intimate and just far enough off the main tourist drag to stay genuinely quiet even in August.
Summer concerts under the stars
Every summer the cloister becomes an open-air concert venue, hosting classical music performances and jazz evenings as part of the Estate Musicale Internazionale di Alghero festival. The acoustics of the stone arcade are extraordinary — check the local programme and book tickets early if your visit overlaps.
After visiting, the surrounding streets between Via Carlo Alberto and Via Sant'Erasmo are among the most photogenic in the old town — Gothic windows, hanging geraniums and the occasional glimpse of the sea at the end of an alley. This is the Alghero the tour groups miss.
