Parc Natural de s'Albufera de Mallorca

Just three kilometres south of Alcúdia town, s'Albufera is the largest wetland in the Balearic Islands and one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the western Mediterranean — a vast, reedy delta where ospreys hunt, purple herons stalk and greater flamingos wade in extraordinary numbers. It's the kind of place that makes non-birders become birders.

The Birdlife

S'Albufera shelters over 200 recorded bird species across the year; spring migration (April–May) is the undisputed highlight when the park fills with warblers, marsh harriers, night herons and, on lucky days, glossy ibis moving through in small flocks.

Greater flamingos are now present year-round in growing numbers — the best viewpoint is the Sa Roca visitor centre hide, which overlooks an open lagoon where dozens of flamingos can often be seen feeding at close range.

Trails & Access

Five colour-coded walking trails ranging from 1.5 km to 8 km wind through reedbeds, tamarisk scrub and open lagoons; the flat terrain makes every route accessible for all fitness levels, and bicycles are permitted on the main paths.

Entry is free but you must collect a permit at the Sa Roca visitor centre (open daily 09:00–17:00 in winter, 09:00–18:00 in summer); numbers are capped to protect the habitat so arrive early in peak season.

Best Time to Go

Dawn visits in spring and autumn reward early risers with extraordinary light over the reedbeds and the highest bird activity before the heat builds — bring binoculars and a telephoto lens if you have one.

Summer middays are quiet and very hot; the park remains worth visiting for the landscape and resident species but the big migration spectacles belong to spring and autumn.
