Parque Regional de El Valle y Carrascoy
Rising dramatically behind Alcantarilla to the south, the Sierra de Carrascoy forms the backbone of a 16,000-hectare regional park that rewards hikers with panoramic views stretching from the Murcian plain to the distant Mediterranean glimmer on clear winter days. Pine-scented trails, limestone ridges and a surprising density of bird life make it one of the most accessible wild escapes in the Murc
Key trails from the Alcantarilla side
The GR-247 footpath connects Alcantarilla's southern edge to the park boundary in under 30 minutes of walking, then climbs steadily through Aleppo pine and rosemary scrub toward the Collado del Pino saddle at around 450 m. From there, a short detour east reaches the Ermita de la Fuensanta viewpoint, sacred to Murcia's patron saint, with a stone terrace that frames the entire huerta spread below.
A gentler circuit of about 8 km loops through the lower pine forest, passing a restored lime-kiln (calera) and several seasonal springs — manageable for fit beginners and rewarding in spring when cistus and wild lavender are in bloom.
Wildlife and best seasons
Carrascoy is prime territory for Bonelli's eagle, eagle owl and short-toed snake eagle — bring binoculars and scan the limestone outcrops above the treeline in early morning. Red fox, stone marten and wild boar are common at dusk.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are the ideal windows: temperatures sit between 14–22 °C, the light is golden and the scrubland is either flowering or turning amber. Summer hiking is possible before 09:00 but the exposed ridges become punishing by midday.
