Restaurante El Gallo
Tucked into a vaulted stone dining room on Calle Azagra in the heart of the old town, Restaurante El Gallo is the address locals point visitors to when they want honest, ingredient-driven Aragonese cooking without pretension. The lamb here is locally raised and the black truffle comes from the nearby Serranía.
What to Order
The signature dish is ternasco de Aragón al horno — slow-roasted suckling lamb with garlic and rosemary, served with roasted potatoes that have absorbed every drop of the pan juices. It is the definitive version of Aragón's most emblematic dish.
In truffle season (December to March) the kitchen adds shaved Tuber melanosporum to scrambled eggs and pasta with a generosity that would make a Périgord chef wince with envy. The local Garnacha wines from the nearby DO Cariñena pair beautifully with both.
Atmosphere and Practicalities
The dining room occupies a genuine medieval stone cellar with barrel-vaulted ceilings and candlelit tables — atmospheric without being kitsch. In summer, a small terrace opens onto the narrow lane outside, perfect for people-watching between courses.
Portions are generous and prices are honest for the quality: a full three-course lunch with wine rarely exceeds €30 per person. Weekend lunches fill up fast, so book ahead by phone or through their Facebook page.
