Al Aqalitah Nile Sunset Viewpoint
The village of Al Aqalitah, on the Luxor West Bank just south of Jazirat Al Awamiyyah, offers some of the most unobstructed sunset views over the Nile in all of Upper Egypt — the kind where the river goes from silver to copper to deep rose in the space of twenty minutes, with the Theban hills glowing amber behind it.
Why This Spot Beats the Corniche
While Luxor's East Bank Corniche is the obvious place to watch the sun dip, Al Aqalitah on the West Bank delivers something far more atmospheric: the light falls on the river from the west, turning the water into a mirror of fire while the silhouettes of feluccas drift silently past. The absence of large tourist hotels means the foreground is all palm groves and sugar-cane fields rather than car parks.
The viewpoint is best reached by walking north along the West Bank riverbank path from the local ferry landing — a flat, easy 15-minute stroll past small farms and the occasional tethered donkey. Locals sit out here in the evenings too, which gives the whole experience a wonderfully unhurried, communal feel.
Hot-Air Balloons at Dawn — the Other Show
Al Aqalitah is also prime territory for the Luxor hot-air balloon spectacle at sunrise. Dozens of balloons launch from the West Bank fields before 6 am, drifting silently over the Valley of the Kings and descending towards the Nile — viewed from the riverbank here, the effect is surreal and deeply beautiful.
Several guesthouses in Jazirat Al Awamiyyah and Al Aqalitah have rooftop terraces specifically oriented for this dawn show. Booking a room with a Nile-facing roof terrace is one of the smartest moves you can make in Luxor — no alarm clock, just the sound of the Nile and a sky full of colour.
Felucca Sailing at Dusk
For the full Nile-at-sunset experience, hire a felucca — the traditional wooden sailing boat — from the West Bank ferry landing for an hour around dusk. Prices are negotiable and the boats are skippered by local sailors who know exactly which channel catches the best evening light.
The gentle pace of a felucca, with no engine noise and the sail catching whatever breeze comes off the desert, is one of the most meditative experiences Luxor offers. Bring a light jacket — the Nile breeze turns cool quickly after sunset, even in October.
