Ancient Thera Footpath from Perissa to Mesa Vouno
Most visitors to the Akrotiri area overlook the fact that a second ancient city — Ancient Thera — sits on the dramatic Mesa Vouno ridge connecting the beaches of Perissa and Kamari, just 15 km northeast of Akrotiri. The footpath from Perissa beach climbs 369 metres through wild thyme and oregano to reach a Hellenistic and Roman city perched on a knife-edge ridge with sheer drops to both coasts.
The hike and the ruins
The trail begins at the end of Perissa's main beach road and is marked with red waymarkers; it takes about 45–60 minutes of steady uphill walking on a well-maintained stone path. The effort is entirely worth it: Ancient Thera occupies one of the most improbable urban sites in the Aegean, with the ruins of a gymnasium, a theatre, a sanctuary of Artemidoros, and a main street (the Stoa Basilike) all spread along a ridge barely 50 metres wide in places.
The views from the top are genuinely vertiginous — Perissa's black-sand beach stretches below on one side, Kamari's beach on the other, and on clear days you can see Crete on the southern horizon. The ruins themselves date from the 9th century BC through the Byzantine period, with Ptolemaic Egyptian inscriptions carved directly into the rock face near the gymnasium — a reminder that Santorini was once a Ptolemaic naval base.
Practical tips for the hike
Start no later than 08:00 in summer to avoid the worst of the heat; the path is south-facing and fully exposed above the first 100 metres. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, sturdy shoes (the path is rocky near the top), and sun protection. The site has no shade whatsoever.
Alternatively, a paved road from Kamari allows you to drive or take a taxi to the site entrance and visit the ruins without the hike — but you'll miss the full drama of the ascent. The archaeological site charges a small entry fee (€4) and is open Tuesday to Sunday 08:00–15:00; confirm hours before visiting as they can vary by season. Combine this with a morning swim at Perissa's black-sand beach before the hike for a perfect full-day excursion from Akrotiri.
