Ngeremeduu Bay Mangrove Kayak, Aimeliik Coast
The western coast of Aimeliik opens onto Ngeremeduu Bay, one of the largest and most pristine mangrove systems in Micronesia. Paddle into the labyrinthine channels at high tide and you enter a mirrored world of arching roots, darting kingfishers, and absolute stillness.
A Living Ecosystem at Your Paddle
Ngeremeduu Bay's mangrove belt is a nursery for much of Palau's reef fish — juvenile snappers and groupers shelter in the root tangles just centimetres from your kayak. The same channels are home to monitor lizards sunning on exposed roots, land crabs scuttling through the mud, and the amphibious mudskipper fish that seem to defy the boundary between water and land.
Palau is widely regarded as one of the finest kayaking destinations in the world, and the Aimeliik coastline offers some of the most sheltered, crowd-free paddling on Babeldaob. The tidal channels twist and branch unpredictably — getting pleasantly lost is part of the experience.
Birdwatching on the Water
Palau counts approximately 46 native and 13 endemic bird species, and the mangrove edges of Ngeremeduu Bay are prime habitat for many of them. Keep an eye out for the biib (Palau fruit dove) — the islands' beloved national bird — as well as white-tailed tropic birds gliding overhead and reef herons stalking the shallows.
Early morning paddling, before the heat builds, offers the best wildlife sightings. The light at that hour also turns the water into hammered copper — a photographer's gift.
Practical Paddling Notes
Kayak tours of the Aimeliik and Ngeremeduu coastline can be arranged through operators based in Koror; most run half-day or full-day guided excursions. Always paddle with a guide on your first visit — the channels are complex and tidal timing matters enormously.
Carry insect repellent, a dry bag for your camera, and plenty of water. The mangrove canopy provides shade but humidity is high; pace yourself and enjoy the silence.
