On a quiet pedestrian lane just off the main drag, Indio Feliz has been the most consistently recommended restaurant in Aguas Calientes for years — a quirky, candlelit bistro where French technique meets Andean ingredients in genuinely creative ways. After days on the trail, it feels like stumbling into a Parisian side-street in the middle of the cloud forest.

The Food: Where the Andes Meet the Loire

The menu at Indio Feliz brings together Peruvian and French flavours in a colourful, eccentric setting that feels nothing like the generic tourist restaurants on the main avenue. Signature dishes include trout almandine — fresh Urubamba River trout pan-fried with almond butter — and creative takes on lomo saltado and causa that elevate familiar Peruvian staples with European finesse.

Local ingredients are front and centre: Andean potatoes, quinoa, aji amarillo chilli, and freshwater trout sourced from the surrounding rivers appear throughout the menu. The set three-course menu offers exceptional value and is the most popular option for first-time visitors.

The wine list is modest but thoughtful, and the cocktail menu features pisco sour variations that are strong enough to feel like a reward after a day at altitude.

Atmosphere and Ambience

The interior is dim, warm, and decorated with an eccentric mix of Andean textiles and bistro-style furniture — exactly the kind of place where you linger over a second glass of wine rather than rushing out. In the evening, candles on every table create a surprisingly romantic atmosphere for a town that is essentially a tourist base camp.

The service is attentive and the staff are accustomed to international visitors, with menus available in English and Spanish. Reservations are recommended in peak season (June–August) as the dining room fills quickly after the last afternoon bus returns from Machu Picchu.

Indio Feliz is located on Pasaje Lloque Yupanqui 103, a short walk from Plaza Manco Capac — look for the painted facade and the small terrace. It opens for dinner from around 6 p.m. and is typically full by 7:30 p.m. in high season.
