Paradise Valley (Vallée du Paradis)
Just 60 km northeast of Agadir, a winding mountain road drops into a palm-fringed gorge where natural emerald pools cascade between rose-pink granite boulders. Paradise Valley is the escape hatch every beach-weary visitor needs — and it still feels like a secret.
Swimming Holes in the Atlas Foothills
The valley is carved by a seasonal river cutting through the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, creating a series of natural swimming pools deep enough for cliff-jumping and calm enough for a lazy float. Vibrant birdlife fills the palms overhead, and the sound of the city feels impossibly far away.
Local families spread picnic mats on the flat rocks, small riverside cafés will grill whatever fish or meat you bring, and the whole scene has an unhurried, communal energy that is the antithesis of a hotel pool. Go early to claim the cleanest water and the best boulders before the day-trippers arrive.
Getting There and Making a Day of It
The road from Agadir climbs through argan tree forests — keep an eye out for the famous tree-climbing goats balanced improbably in the branches — before descending into the valley. The drive itself is a highlight, with panoramic stops between the Atlas ridgelines.
Most visitors combine Paradise Valley with the banana village of Tamri to the north and, if time allows, a detour to secret coastal sand dunes where the Atlantic meets the Sahara in miniature. A private driver or guided day tour (around 100 MAD per person) is the most practical option, as the narrow mountain road demands local knowledge.
What to Bring
Pack a swimsuit, sturdy sandals (not flip-flops — the boulder path from the car park is uneven), plenty of water and sunscreen. There are small snack stalls in the valley but bringing a picnic elevates the experience enormously.
The valley is open from around 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Spring and early autumn are the sweetest seasons — water levels are higher after winter rains and the heat is more forgiving than July or August.
