Skip the resort breakfast buffet at least once and head to Hithadhoo Town Market, the beating commercial heart of Addu City. Arrive early and you'll find the freshest tuna landed that morning, pyramids of tropical fruit, homemade hedhikaa snacks still warm from the pan, and shopkeepers who are genuinely delighted to see a curious traveller.
What's on the Stalls
The market is considered Addu's chief shopping hub — virtually every Hithadhoo resident passes through it for fresh vegetables, dried fish, coconut, and daily staples. Look for locally grown produce that rarely makes it to resort menus: breadfruit, drumstick leaves, bitter gourd, and small sweet bananas grown on the connected islands.
The snack stalls are the real draw. Hedhikaa — the Maldivian tradition of afternoon short-eats — shows up here as bis keemiya (tuna-stuffed pastry), gulha (fish dumplings), and bondi (coconut pancakes). Wash them down with a glass of sai (sweet milky tea) and you have the most authentic meal of your entire trip for under USD 2.
Shopping Beyond the Food
Beyond produce, smaller stalls sell handwoven thundu kunaa mats, coconut-shell trinkets, and locally made beauty products — the kind of souvenirs that actually reflect island life rather than a factory in Malé. Prices are local prices; no resort markup in sight.
The atmosphere is relaxed and the shopkeepers are famously warm. A few words of greeting in Dhivehi (Assalaamu Alaikum goes a long way) and you'll likely end up with an impromptu lesson in Adduan cooking traditions.
