Columbia Road NW between 16th Street and Adams Mill Road is lined with large-scale murals that document the neighbourhood's multicultural history, celebrate local heroes and turn a simple walk into an open-air gallery visit. Many pieces were commissioned through D.C.'s public art programmes and are maintained by local artists, making the collection ever-evolving.
Highlights to Look For
The most celebrated piece is a sweeping mural near the intersection of Columbia Road and 18th Street depicting the waves of immigration — Ethiopian, Latino, Caribbean — that have shaped Adams Morgan since the 1960s.
Look also for the portrait murals on the sides of apartment buildings along the 2400 block of Columbia Road; several depict neighbourhood elders and community organisers by name, turning the street into a living memorial.

Morning light from the east hits the north-facing walls on Columbia Road beautifully between 8 and 10 a.m. — ideal for photography without harsh shadows or crowds.
The murals change periodically as new commissions are added and older pieces are refreshed; what you see today may be different from what appears on Google Street View, which is part of the appeal.
