Amsterdam Falafelshop
Since 2004, Amsterdam Falafelshop has been the undisputed late-night anchor of 18th Street, serving crispy, freshly fried falafel balls stuffed into pillowy pita with a build-your-own topping bar that runs to more than 20 options. It is one of those rare places that is just as good at 2 a.m. as it is at noon.
The Falafel
The falafel balls are fried to order — crunchy on the outside and herb-green and fluffy within — and the shop uses a Dutch-inspired recipe that has remained unchanged since opening day.
The topping bar is the real draw: tahini, harissa, pickled turnips, fried eggplant, cucumber-tomato salad and a dozen more options let you build a sandwich that is entirely your own.
When to Go
The shop stays open until 3 a.m. on weekdays and until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, making it the natural final stop after a night out on 18th Street.
Midday visits are quieter and you can take your time at the topping bar — weekend nights involve a queue that moves quickly but can stretch out the door.
