San Carlo Theatre
The oldest continuously active opera house in the world sits on Via San Carlo looking, from the outside, almost modest — a neoclassical facade you might pass without slowing down. Step inside and the scale changes everything: six tiers of 184 boxes curve around a horseshoe auditorium 28 metres long, all carved gold and red velvet, with a stage deep enough to swallow a small street.
When Charles Burney visited in the 18th century he wrote that the theatre made him feel as though he had entered a new world. The building has been burning and rebuilding and performing ever since 1737, and it still runs a full season of opera and ballet today.

The story behind San Carlo Theatre
Charles VII of Naples commissioned the theatre in 1737 as part of his Royal Palace complex — connected by a private passageway so royalty never had to touch the street. Architect Giovanni Antonio de Medrano and Angelo Carasale built it in eight months for 75,000 ducats. It opened on 4 November 1737, the king's name day, with Domenico Sarro's Achille in Sciro.
A fire gutted the interior on 12 February 1816. Architect Antonio Niccolini rebuilt it within ten months on the orders of King Ferdinand IV. The original blue-and-gold colour scheme gave way to the red and gold you see today sometime around 1854. Gaetano Donizetti served as artistic director from 1822 to 1838, composing sixteen operas here including Lucia di Lammermoor in 1835. Rossini, Bellini and Verdi all had major works premiered on this stage. WWII bombing damaged the roof and foyer; both were repaired, and the theatre has not closed since.

Toledo metro station (Line 1) is a five-minute walk. Guided tours run daily from 10:30 AM, with the last entry around 4:30–5:00 PM; adult tickets are €9. Performance tickets start at €20 — book in advance. The opera season runs late November through July; ballet December through early June.

A beautiful piece of history, although we were only on a tour, a private experience of the grandiose building completely conveyed its splendor in every way. I only regret that the color of the upholstered furniture and curtains in the interior has been changed from turquoise to the current burgundy red. I recommend at least a short tour, a glimpse into some lost time and architecture.
This was our first opera, we saw La Boheime and was blown away by the whole experience. The opera house was very grand amazing decor, very grand and perfectly clean. We would definitely return if we get the chance.
I visited the theater for a piano concert with South Korea’s most famous pianist. It’s a special feeling to listen to the concert in such a historic venue. The interior architecture is very beautiful and a must-see.
Magnificent theatre well worth a visit. We we told the history of the place. Got to see it from the second floor too and in the Royal box & large mirrored hall with beautiful chandeliers.
If you have the chance take the tour, it’s well explained and you get the opportunity to be in the oldest Theatre in the world, and if you have the chance to see opera or a concert, totally worth it!! I have the chance to find a ticket for Tosca by Puccini and it was absolutely fantastic
