Samoeng Loop
The Samoeng Loop is a roughly 100-kilometre mountain circuit that leaves Chiang Mai's old city through Chang Phueak Gate and doesn't come back the same way it left. Counterclockwise, the road climbs Mae Sa Valley first — past ten-tiered waterfalls and a thousand-hectare botanical garden — before cresting around 1,200 metres and dropping back on Route 1269, a steep, technical stretch best met when your hands are already warmed up.
The loop takes six to seven hours with proper stops, and that pacing matters. You're not moving between sights so much as riding through a landscape that changes register every twenty minutes — jungle canopy, roadside shrine, a high viewpoint at 1,120 metres where a wooden sign and a strip of gravel shoulder are all the infrastructure you get.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who've ridden it more than once tend to agree on a few things: fill your tank before you leave Chiang Mai even if you know there are village pumps along the way, and start by 8:00 — 9:00 at the absolute latest. The Honda Click 125 handles the whole loop fine solo; if you're riding two-up, spend the extra baht on a PCX 160 for the engine braking alone.
The story behind Samoeng Loop
The loop takes its name from Samoeng, a small town in the highlands northwest of Chiang Mai, though the town sits five kilometres off the circuit itself and was never really its centre. The road infrastructure it follows — Routes 107, 1096, and 1269 — developed incrementally as the Thai government extended paved mountain roads into the northern highlands, connecting Mae Rim district communities that had previously been difficult to reach in wet season.
The landmarks that give the loop its character arrived at different moments. Wat Pa Dara Phirom in Mae Rim was founded in 1939 and became a royally sponsored temple sixty years later, in 1999. The Siam Insect Zoo, at the Mae Rim end of the circuit, opened in 2006 under founder Pisuth Ek-Amnuay. The Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, spreading across a thousand hectares, brought the loop a more formal anchor and a reason to slow down.
Good to know
Start from Chang Phueak Gate heading north on Route 107. Ride counterclockwise. Budget a full day for the complete loop; Mae Sa Valley alone works as a half-day out-and-back. Samoeng town is five kilometres off the circuit — a deliberate detour, not a pass-through. Mae Sa Waterfall closes at 16:30.
November through mid-February is the window when the loop earns its reputation — cold mornings at elevation, clear mountain views, and strawberry season running in the highlands. From late February through April, farmers burn fields across the northern highlands after harvest and smoke settles against the mountains; on bad days in March and April, the long views disappear entirely. The rainy season from May through September brings slick roads and reduced visibility, with August averaging over 400 mm of rain.

Loved it up here. I had a rental motorbike from Bikago (they are ace) a Honda 160 ADV. Fantastic ride to do the 'Samoeng Loop' which I did in a clockwise direction. Beautiful forest ride. Very tight and twisty and I was grateful I hadn't hired a Royal Enfield 350 Classic. The small motorbike was capable on the very tight curves. Perfectly adequate for the ride.
Breathtaking view near the city. It took 1:30 to get there from the city. Has many curves, ups and downs along the way and there is a loop 1269-1096 and Mon Jam. Have a safe ride!
70/77 Thai provinces done ✅🇹🇭 While enjoying our Songkran loop, got ti drive across here. Many people were still celebrating, great roads to ride on, but in the middle of burning season, so no blue skies at all. Only 7 provinces left now before completing the full country challenge on two wheels 🏍️
A good viewpoint of the valley with a small patch of space to park your car or bike for photoshoot! A must stop if u r doing the loop!!!
