At Sop Ruak, where the Ruak River slides into the Mekong, you can stand on Thai soil and see three countries at once. Longtail boats — flat-bottomed, diesel-engined, mounted on a gimbal at the stern — wait at the pier to take you out onto the wide brown water where the borders dissolve into river haze.
The boat ride itself is the point. From the water, the golden Buddha seated on its boat-shaped plinth on the Thai bank catches the light differently than it does from shore, and the Lao island of Don Sao drifts close enough that you can step off, briefly, into another country without a visa.

Deposit your passport at Thai Immigration before boarding for Don Sao; it comes back when you return to the Thai pier.

The name Golden Triangle dates to the 1960s, coined to describe the opium-producing borderlands where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. The logic was blunt: a kilogram of opium could be traded for a kilogram of gold, making the crop literally worth its weight. At its peak, this region was the world's largest source of opium, the trade flowing outward along the same river routes the longtail boats now follow for tourism.
The Thai government's sustained effort to dismantle opium cultivation is documented at the Hall of Opium Museum nearby. The ancient town of Chiang Saen, formally founded in 1329 and home to a 14th-century stupa at Wat Phra That Chedi Luang, predates the opium era entirely — a reminder that this stretch of the Mekong has been a crossroads for far longer than the 20th century made it notorious.

Sop Ruak is about 70 km north of Chiang Rai — roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road. Blue songthaews connect Mae Sai and Chiang Saen via the Golden Triangle every 20 minutes or so until around 15:00. Budget at least 2–3 hours for the viewpoint and a one-hour boat trip. Boat fares start around 400 THB.
November through February brings cool, dry weather — the most comfortable window for being out on the water, with temperatures around 21–23°C in the Chiang Rai region. The river runs at its lowest in April; by May or June the monsoon pushes water levels up significantly, which affects boat access and visibility along the banks.

We had a great boat trip! Lily took very good care of us. She talked with us, told us about the places and made the trip fun and enjoyable. Kong made our drinks with care and recommended local drinks for us to try. Everything was delicious. Everyone was very happy and impressed. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience
We had a cruise from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. The boat itself is very nice - started operations in December 2024, built not long before that. Very fresh and the rooms are spacious. 13 rooms so it is for up to 26 people. During our cruise there were 13 guests and 17 crew members so it felt great (I reckon even for the full 26 persons it would still be more that enough). The main guide GT was super nice and trying hard so that everything is fine and everyone is happy. I didn’t really get why at every stop we had a local guide on top as the amount of information they provided i guess GT could have covered himself - maybe just sharing tourism revenues with more people which is an understandable thing. Activities were fine, far from anything breathtaking. But quite good and fit the overall laidback vibe of the cruise. What we liked least was the food - Lao dishes were very good, but European ones (maybe half of meals) were not. So we don’t understand why they tried to cook what doesn’t come as a success at all instead of focusing on the local cuisine that would be a much better part of the experience. All the team was amazing and very attentive.
We spent a great evening. Very nice sunset cruise. Special thanks to Kim, Lily and Kong who are wonderful in letting us enjoy the scene, the food and drinks.. Highly recommend this river cruise. If it is a 6 stars rating , we would love to give a 6.
The trip started with light thunderstorms but thank god it’s stopped on time. This trip is really good and enjoyable. Kong, Lily and team are great. They will help me take pictures and introduce the scenery along the way. The food is great too. Thank you.
I was scared of a tourist scam - but this was one of the best experiences during our stay in Luang Prabang! We did the Canapé Sunset Tour and it was simply perfect - from the comfortable canapé lounges, the great service (special thanks to Lily), the breathtaking views to the vast menu of drinks and food. We loved everything about this experience and can only recommend it! We booked it through the Avani+ hotel who were also friendly and helpful at all times.
