Salad Beach
The name gives it away if you know your local history: Salad, in the language of Koh Phangan, means pirate. This northwest-coast bay, 600 metres of pale sand curving between two rocky headlands, was once a staging point for raids on merchant ships. Today the drama is considerably quieter — a reef sits roughly 100 metres offshore, the music drifting from the few beach bars leans reggae, and the road that skirts the sand doubles as a village strip of convenience stores and ATMs.
The beach is narrow enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, which keeps it from ever feeling overwhelming. The water is calm and shallow, and the coral heads near shore mean water shoes are worth the luggage space.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who come back tend to bring their own snorkelling gear — there's nowhere on the beach to rent it. They also time their visits for the dry months when the tide runs deeper, making the swim to the reef less of a wade. The scooter ride from Thong Sala along the coast road is half the pleasure.
The story behind Salad Beach
In the 18th century, the sheltered geometry of this bay made it useful to Thai pirates who used it as a base for attacking merchant vessels leaving Bangkok, ships that often carried opium and other high-value cargo. The headlands that give the beach its shape also gave those crews cover — deep enough to anchor, screened enough to wait.
The name held after the pirates left. Where the bay once served as a launching point for raids, it now sits at the quieter end of Koh Phangan's spectrum, a place more associated with reef fish than with the island's full-moon reputation.
Good to know
Take a songthaew or rent a scooter from Thong Sala Port — the beach is about 15 km and 30 minutes away. Go between December and March for calm water and the best swimming depth. No entrance fee, no public showers; toilets are at the restaurants. Bring your own snorkelling equipment.
December through March is the window: warm, bright, and dry enough that the water runs deeper at high tide and the reef is properly swimmable. April brings humidity and afternoon downpours. The southwest monsoon, arriving September through mid-November, brings high winds and can disrupt the ferry crossings that get you here.

We loved this beach, very quiet, relaxing, and beautiful. There are a handful of nice little restaurants right on the beach with really affordable drinks and food. It's an excellent place to drop by for a few hours or an afternoon.
My favourite beach in Koh Phangan! No doubt! So beautiful and clean, before 13:00 the colour of the water is amazing. They have a restaurant nearby that the fresh coconut water is only 40 baths.

What a beautiful sunset and quite a bit of opportunities for dinner, drinks and massages. Relaxed vibe, some bars play music but not super loud.
Great beach!! Clean and nice water with plenty of coral and sea life close to shore. Beware of sea urchins too though. Also water is quite warm where shallow. Not much shade at this beach but it is nice and wide and a few bars/shops/cafes available.
