Fisherman's Village Koh Samui
On the northern coast of Koh Samui, the main street of Bophut's Fisherman's Village runs in a single line parallel to the water, its old Chinese shophouses leaning into each other like books on a shelf. The wooden facades are the real thing — built by Chinese immigrants in the 19th century, preserved rather than reconstructed. At the far end, a rickety wooden pier still carries fishermen and their gear out over the Gulf of Thailand.
By day the street is quiet, shaded, good for slow walking. By Friday evening, Beach Road closes to traffic and becomes the weekly Walking Street Market, where 70-baht cocktails, Muay Thai demonstrations, and grills loaded with squid and shrimp skewers fill the stretch from dusk until around eleven.

People who come back tend to time it to a Friday. The roundabout near the pier turns into an open-air beer garden, and the street food is worth the detour alone — fresh spring rolls at 20 baht, pad thai at 50. Arrive around five to walk the shophouses before the crowd thickens, then stay for the performances outside the old pier.
The story behind Fisherman's Village Koh Samui
Chinese fishermen began arriving on Koh Samui's northern shore sometime between 1850 and 1873, though they were not the first to work this coastline — Malay Muslim fishermen had been here for several centuries before them. The Chinese settlers built wooden shophouses along what is now Middle Road, establishing a fishing port that supplied the island's north side for well over a century.
The shift away from fishing began gradually in the 1970s and accelerated through the 1980s and into the 2000s, as tourism reshaped the island's economy. Many descendants of the original fishing families still live in the village. The shophouses they built remain standing, now housing cafes and small shops rather than nets and salt.
Good to know
Six kilometres from Samui International Airport, a 15-minute ride by taxi or rented motorbike. No entrance fee. Shops open from around 11am, but most things worth seeing happen after 5pm. The Walking Street Market runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings from 6–10pm; Friday's version, along Beach Road, runs until 11pm. Budget two to four hours.
Temperatures hover between 28–32°C year-round. The driest and most comfortable window runs from mid-January through April, with February and March seeing the least rain. November is the wettest month by a wide margin — expect torrential downpours — and the rainy season broadly stretches from May through to mid-January.

This was a great hotel for our visit to Koh Samui. The best part of this hotel is its proximity to Fisherman's Village. It was incredibly easy to explore the village and its multiple markets. The staff were very accommodating. The rooms were very clean. They even arranged a proposal package with some decorations and cake, which was extremely appreciated! Would definitely recommend staying here for your Koh Samui visit.
The villager is in a great location, close to the beach, night market, restaurants and stores. I was located in the purple building for my stay. The cleanliness of the room was questionable. Extremely run down, the furniture was super out dated, room was filled with mosquitos, bathroom was filled with drain flies, a few cockroaches and multiple ticks found throughout the room. The sheets had holes and stains, did not look clean. Majority of the staff were very kind and helpful. However, one staff member working at the front desk (a women, did not get her name), was extremely rude and passive aggressive. I asked for an extra bath towel as our shower had tiles missing from the shower floor. Which would leak onto the bathroom floor flooding the whole bathroom, everytime it was in use. After expressing this to the lady at the front desk I was felt like I was lying about the situation and it was diabolical I was asking for an extra towel. All good I’ll use the one from the filthy floor to dry myself. Overall, Koh Samui is a beautiful destination to visit. The villager is in a great location, has a nice pool and majority of staff are great. However, it’s not very clean but I guess that’s what you get for going low budget.

This place is excellent value for money. Clean room just a few minutes walk to the beach and all the main bars and restaurants. Great to have the pool aswell. We stayed in the purple building.
Great location, decent enough room considering the price. When we were checking into the room the doors on the balcony were open and as a result there was a lot of mosquitos in the room. The bathroom lacks any sort of shelf to store your amenities and the toilet wasn’t very clean. Bed was comfortable and the bedroom itself was very clean. It was an okay stay on a budget, the location really makes it.
