Chiang Mai Old City (Walled City)
The moat still holds water. That's the first thing you notice arriving at Chiang Mai's Old City — a 20-metre-wide channel enclosing a near-perfect rectangle, the same water-and-wall logic that King Mengrai laid down in 1296. Inside, the grid is dense with temples: Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, each one within walking distance of the next, each one older than most European cathedrals.
The walled city is compact enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, which makes it deceptively easy to underestimate. Give it more time. The corner ramparts — four of them, one at each angle of the walls — mark where the fortifications once rose highest, and the surviving gates still orient your movement through streets that have been in use for seven centuries.

People who return to the Old City tend to anchor their mornings at Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, before the tour groups arrive. The afternoon light through Wat Phan Tao's teak viharn is worth timing separately. The Three Kings Monument in the central square is a reliable meeting point and makes more sense once you know the founding story.
The story behind Chiang Mai Old City (Walled City)
In 1296, King Mengrai chose this river plain in northern Thailand as the new capital of Lan Na, reportedly in alliance with King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao. Construction moved fast: 90,000 men raised the walls, gates, moat, and royal structures within four months. Mengrai himself lived on the site during building, at what is now Wat Chiang Man.
The city accumulated its character across the Mangrai dynasty. King Kuena's reign in the 14th century brought an artistic renaissance; King Tilokoraj in the 15th century raised many of the Buddhist temples still standing today. Burmese forces took the city in 1556, and occupation lasted two centuries — a rupture that explains certain gaps in the architectural record. The walls and gates were restored at various points, and the moat remains, still holding water around the same rectangle Mengrai surveyed.
Good to know
Red songthaew trucks run from 20 THB and are the easiest way in from the train station, about 3 km east. Temple dress codes apply throughout — shoulders and knees covered. Wat Chedi Luang opens at 6 AM if you want an early start; most others open at 8 AM. Budget at least a full day.
The cool season from November to February brings the most comfortable walking temperatures, with dry air and clear mornings. March and April turn hot and hazy from agricultural burning in the region; the rainy season from May to October brings afternoon downpours but also lush greenery and far fewer visitors.

Big clean rooms, very friendly staff, great location next to old town. Restaurants, massages and car/motor rentals next door. 7-11 nearby. Cotton towels, free water and tea/coffee. Minifridge. Desk&chair. Points to consider: avoid rooms facing the road, motorcycle mufflers will disturb your sleep. The TV can't play USB movies. The aircon will inevitably blow to your bed.
on arrival day the staff who checked in was very helpful, he give the room ready before check in time and the room very cozy, the smell is good! also staff service with smiles and friendly and the last day I have breakfast at restaurant that so yummy and warm welcome from staff & chef. My first trip at Chiang Mai completely happy!!!
The hotel is nice: spacious, clean, quiet, well-equipped rooms (microwave, crockery, balcony). You can even ask them to do your laundry and ironing, which is really useful when you're travelling. The reception staff are very friendly. They even offered the taxi on my way back to the airport because I stayed 5 nights. There are free available water as well. The only two downsides: 1. The Wi-Fi doesn't work well on the top floor. 2. There was a leak of customer data. My email address and booking dates were leaked. I received a spam email with their hotel's signature, asking me to re-enter my credit card details or I would lose my booking. The email was sent three days before the anticipated billing date (coincidence?). I lost €175, and the bank will not reimburse me. I reported it to someone at reception and they investigated. Apparently, it came from the Google website. For future customers: be extremely careful when sharing your personal data (everywhere)
Great location. It's at the corner of the old city wall. 10 minute walk to night bazaar . Good massage place just a minute walk away. 7-eleven and cheap local eate are also a minute away. On site parking is useful Rooms are large. Hot shower but the instant heater is old and could be replaced. Housekeeping team is friendly. Front office staff less friendly.
Great find. Clean well sized room with kettle, fridge, 24/7 hot water and all the things you need to wash and shower. Plus 2 bottles of water every day, good wifi and a room safe (that I messed up a couple of times). Well located away from the hassle but with all the sites and markets easily walkable. Really good hosts. An example: apparently having stayed 4+nights I was entitled to a free taxi to the airport or station. Unaware I booked a Grab. They gave me the cost of the Grab without me saying anything. Only minor downside: if you are in a room overlooking the road and, like me, are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs
