La Flottille
Sitting on a wooden terrace right at the edge of the Grand Canal inside the palace grounds, La Flottille is the most scenically situated restaurant in Versailles — a relaxed brasserie where you can eat buckwheat galettes and drink chilled Muscadet while swans drift past on the water.
What to Order
The galette complète — buckwheat crêpe filled with ham, Emmental and a runny egg — is the reliable workhorse of the menu, made properly and served hot. Follow it with a sweet crêpe drizzled with salted-butter caramel for a thoroughly Breton-in-Versailles experience.
The wine list is short but sensible: a glass of Loire Muscadet pairs beautifully with the galettes, while a citron pressé (freshly squeezed lemonade) is the right call on a hot afternoon after hours of garden walking.
The Setting
The terrace juts out over the water so that the Grand Canal fills your entire field of vision as you eat. Rowing boats and electric boats hired from the nearby dock drift past, and on busy Saturdays the scene has a festive, almost Impressionist quality.
La Flottille is inside the palace gardens, so you need a valid garden ticket to reach it. That said, on free-entry days (non-fountain weekdays) it is accessible without paying for the palace itself — a useful trick for a budget-friendly lunch with a royal backdrop.
